"We have met the enemy and he is us" Bassmaster Article

Hey all a good article I read on bassmaster.com that I hope serves just as a reminder about how important proper etiquette is now more than ever as we fight to keep our access rights as fisherman more and more these days...

Nice find Ryan. I like this article for a lot of reasons but I do take an issue with the writers very first point about noise. My thought is that a lake is a public place right? I certainly wouldn't buy a house next to a highway and then complain about noise level. While I do think we can all do a better job of being courteous while being on the water, homeowners need to understand what they are getting into before building/buying a house on the water as it pertains to noise.

It would be on the homeowner I completely agree, however that's just not how it works more times than not we will be on the short end.  So I take a "Can't fight city hall" approach and try to keep the noise levels down.

I think for the most part as a club were do a pretty decent job of trying to keep the noise down while on the water in the AM.  Maybe we look to use Paddles with numbers instead of yelling out the number to send off.  The only problem I see is that there needs to be coordination with the send off boat and whomever is registering the boats in at the start.

I am willing to take on that task Marc/Ryan.

I didn't post this because I think we as a club have a problem, that's why I posted it in the general section.  I just thought it was an interesting read is all and something a lot of anglers out there may not take into consideration a little bit of general common sense courtesy can go a long way.

As far as yelling out numbers I don't see this as much of an issue as our outboards are louder than the send off guys yell generally.  To be honest I never even hear my number yelled over my outboard , usually I just look at the guy who is ahead of me and follow him.  As for  registration I thought is has has been going fine, people know to come see Mel or I before you head out take a number pay your fees your done.  I don't think we have been late for a single send off this year.  If there is something that people feel needs to be done differently let me know though.

Yeah I just meant in my post that (we as bass fisherman could do a better job being quite) however I think someone that owns a house on the water has to expect noise very early in the morning. I definitely feel our club does a great job with being courteous.

Agreed at the very least it got some conversation going in here.

I think I have a really good solution to the send off problem.  Chris, you can be the send off boat at all our club tourneys.  :o  And I can be the first boat out with a 10 minute head start, considering I only have 60 horses.  Works for me!! ;D ;D

I second the motion. Boat with the smallest motor starts first.

Henry - The way my luck has been going for pulling numbers, I should just be the designated start boat.  Heck, 2 out of the last 3 tourneys I have been start boat, not that it makes all the difference, I just haven't had any success this season.  I need to get back to the basics and simplify things.  I have way too much crap on my boat and I start to over think things.

Joe, I know ya gonna beat me up; I know I need to simplify!  As I mentioned before I would be a prime candidate for the TV reality show; Horders - Boat storage special.   :D
