I have an HDS 5 Gen 1 and the 8 the structure scan is great I spent the first day out just idling around amazed by it lol.  You can go over a rocky point and count the individual rocks.  Like with anything though it will only help if you use it correctly so practice with it.  There is a ton of literature online to read up on even before you go out to maybe learn a few tricks.

Like Ryan basically said.  Its only as good as the amount of time you invest reading up and spending time on the water using it.  I have the 1198 SI humminbird.  I love it. Although I've only scratched the surface in terms of what it can do, but I have learned so much in just a year of using it.

Good luck with it Jason.  I just picked up a HB 898c with SI.  I am dying just to get out and break in the motor and probably not even bring poles just try to understand the SI.
